Ethiopia has officially entered the race to bid host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after submitting its bid documents to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) confirmed on August 24, 2026, that it had submitted the required bid documents and official Bid Handbook to CAF. The proposal is backed by the Ethiopian government, which has expressed its support for the hosting project.

Ethiopia Wants to Bring AFCON Back 2026
Ethiopia has a long history with the Africa Cup of Nations. The country previously hosted the tournament in 1962, 1968 and 1976. A successful 2028 bid would bring the competition back to Ethiopia after more than five decades.
Ethiopia also hosted and won the 1962 tournament on home soil, when it defeated Egypt in the final.
Government Supports the BID HOST
The EFF TELLS its bid has full backing from the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The federation has presented documentation addressing CAF’s requirements and says the country is ready to host the continent’s major national-team football tournament. 2027

The next edition, AFCON 2027, is scheduled to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Ethiopia’s 2028 bid could therefore potentially keep the tournament in East Africa for another edition.
